Tift County work session previews consent agenda: bridge LMIG application, equipment purchases, generator grant and multiple licenses

At its Jan. 6 work session, the Tift County Board of Commissioners previewed multiple consent-agenda items the county will consider at its Jan. 12 regular meeting, including infrastructure grant applications, equipment purchases and license renewals.
Public Works Director Jason Jordan recommended the county submit the overflow bridge over Little River on Upper Ty Ty Road to the 2026 Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant (LMIG). He reported an estimated total project cost of $1,278,424 and an LMIG grant amount of $939,251.24; remaining funds would come from SPLOST VI. Jordan also recommended purchasing the county’s 2021 Model #150-15 construction motor grader (1,956 hours) for $141,960 plus a three-year extended warranty for $6,310 (total $148,270), to be paid from TSPLOST.
Public Safety Director Joey Fowler described a Hazard Mitigation grant award to buy three generators with an approved total cost of $29,018 (federal $21,764; state $2,902; county $4,352). Fowler said prices have risen roughly $6,500 since the 2019 application, increasing the county’s share and overage to $10,804; funding for the county portion and overage was proposed to come from contingency, with potential for the county to apply for reimbursement after project closeout.
County Manager Jim Carter presented several additional consent items: a renewal Memorandum of Understanding with the Board of Regents/University of Georgia for Cooperative Extension services (unchanged except for an IT Addendum D), an addendum with Watkins & Associates LLC for engineering services on Hunt Road ($253,626), Lease Amendment No. 10 for the Tift County FSA/USDA office (extend lease through Dec. 31, 2031 at $7.50/sq ft), and emergency repairs to Little River Road and Ty Ty Whiddon Mill Road performed at a cost of $70,287.94 by the Scruggs Company using LMIG contract unit pricing.
County Clerk Miriam Jordan reported multiple alcohol-beverage license applications (applicants include Janmanglam R. Patel and Bansariben J. Patel for Shivesh LLC; Chetan Patel for Jiya and Niya LLC; Mohammed M. Hossain for Tifton Business LLC; Jordanne Yunis for Spring Hill Country Club; and FNU Quratulain for Chula Texaco). The sheriff’s office reviewed and recommended approval of those where noted. Jordan also said the county will set and publish qualifying fees by Feb. 1 under Resolution No. 2026-03, which the board indicated should be placed on the Consent Agenda.
Several items were set for the Regular Agenda rather than Consent, including appointments to the Hospital Authority, Tifton-Tift County Tourism Association and Athletic Advisory Committee. Commissioners also made brief comments on roadside litter, recent road repairs, dilapidated housing and community events. No votes were taken at the work session; the listed items were scheduled for action at the Jan. 12 meeting.
