Tift County considers raising public-works bidding threshold to $250,000; board asks staff to survey peer counties

County Manager Jim Carter presented Resolution No. 2026-02 at the Jan. 6 work session, proposing to increase the mandatory bidding threshold for public-works construction projects to $250,000 so the county’s policy aligns with state law and to permit the County Manager, Assistant County Manager or Chief Financial Officer to procure and pay for nonbudgeted goods and services up to an amount to be set by the Board.
Commissioners discussed briefly what the delegated dollar threshold for county executives should be and directed the county manager or county clerk to contact peer counties to learn their limits. The board indicated its desire to place Resolution No. 2026-02 on the Jan. 12 Regular Agenda for fuller discussion and possible adoption.
At the work session no formal vote was taken. The resolution, as presented, would change internal procurement thresholds and delegations of authority; specific delegated dollar limits were not set during the meeting. Commissioners requested comparative data from other counties before taking final action.
