Bolingbrook Arts Council outlines spring events, proposes support for student art mounting

The Bolingbrook Arts Council on March 3 approved its agenda and prior minutes and spent much of the meeting planning spring community events and programming while identifying a need to support student artwork presentation.
Chair Mithra Zaucha reported a communication from Josh (Controlled Chaos) inviting the commission to participate in Shredfest on July 18 and asked commissioners to brainstorm enhanced engagement, such as interactive booths or youth-activation activities. Mithra also said a scheduled check-in on a bench project with Mike Selup did not occur and reminded commissioners the fiscal year ends April 30 and to submit receipts to Treasurer Ocie Koonce.
Visual Arts co-chairs Lea Moore-Beulah and Richard Humphreys proposed converting the “Art in the Windows” exhibit into a “Commissioner’s Choice” showcase featuring commissioners’ own artwork, works they own or artists they recommend; Kathleen Lamb was assigned to create banners. The committee flagged a matting failure after student pieces, mounted with painter’s and masking tape, detached from backing boards due to temperature shifts and poor adhesive quality. Commissioners discussed a proposal for the Arts Commission to purchase higher-quality mat board and adhesives for next year’s January student exhibit and to consider offering framing/matting workshops and outreach to other Bolingbrook-area schools.
The commission announced a call for artists for an Earth Day event at Hidden Oaks on April 25 (2–6 p.m.) with artists allowed one to four submissions and use of 10x10 tents and the outdoor amphitheater; a site visit was noted as needed to plan sculpture display. It also confirmed Arts On the Row dates — June 11 (Boy Band Night), July 9 (Styx tribute) and Aug. 13 (Jolly Ringwalds 80s night) — with two artists per event to be selected and publicized once the timeline is finalized.
Performing Arts co-chairs Jesse Gaffney and Kathleen Lamb promoted a Blues Lab Jam and asked commissioners to help publicize and attend; commissioners also agreed to create short reels and post video content. Mithra said the BHS/community theatrical musical runs March 13–15 and March 20–21 and that ASL interpreters have been secured, with seating near interpreters to be arranged.
Community Events co-chairs Linda Lawrence and Julie Guida outlined an Arbor Day program at Village Hall on April 25 (11 a.m.–2 p.m.) with leaf-stamping and educational activities; the commission decided against serving food due to allergy concerns and noted printing and material needs. Digital Design co-chairs Allaina Humphreys and Jason Arthur reported an artist interview with Lenny Schmidt (noted as a BHS graduate) is being edited with a target release before March 20 and that website updates, including adding a Linktree, are needed.
Votes at a glance: the meeting minutes record voice votes to adopt the March 3 agenda and to approve the Feb. 17 meeting minutes (the minutes state the motion to approve the prior minutes was made by Bobbie Speer and seconded by Allaina Humphreys). The meeting adjourned by voice vote at 8:25 p.m.
The minutes list subcommittee budgets for 2025–2026, including Visual Arts ($11,550), Adaptive Arts ($8,000), Performing Arts ($6,700), Community Events ($3,500) and Digital Design & Operations ($750).
