Bracken County Fiscal Court approves first reading of FY2026–27 budget

The Bracken County Fiscal Court approved the first reading of the county’s fiscal year 2026–27 budget and authorized staff to submit the document to DLG for review.
The presiding officer said he prepared comparative budget spreadsheets and answered members’ questions before the vote. The budget package includes a $200,000 line item for a proposed animal-shelter expansion, a Brooksville sidewalk project entry listed at about $1.3 million, a roughly $1 million certificate of deposit showing in the budget, and a notable increase in the salt allotment for the road department from about $125,000 to $300,000. He also reported an ARPA account balance of $101,720 that remains available for consideration.
"So what we're hopeful for the animal shelter expansion, the complete project is 200,000," the presiding officer said when describing the new line item. Members discussed whether the extra $100,000 for the shelter expansion would come from the General Fund or from remaining ARPA funds; the presiding officer said the ARPA account still shows a balance.
After discussion, Magistrate Debbie Mayfield moved to approve the first reading and Magistrate Heather Brumley seconded. The court approved the first reading by roll call.
The presiding officer said the first reading will be transmitted to DLG and that any adjustments identified before the second reading can be addressed at a subsequent meeting. No final adoption or appropriation occurred; a second reading and any amendments will be required before funds are expended.
