Redwood County agrees to sponsor LRIP projects for Lamberton and Wabasso, approves road materials purchase

Redwood County commissioners voted on Nov. 18 to act as the sponsoring agency for Local Road Improvement Program (LRIP) projects requested by the cities of Lamberton and Wabasso.
For Lamberton, the county agreed to sponsor a First Avenue project, with the motion specifying that the city will be financially responsible for costs not covered by LRIP — including consultant engineering, right-of-way acquisition, construction administration and inspection, utility construction, and any construction costs exceeding the LRIP award. The county also stated it will provide operation and maintenance for one block of the project that is designated as CSAH 106 between Main Street and Birch Street after construction. The Board authorized the Redwood County Highway Engineer to act as the county’s agent on behalf of the application. The measure passed by roll call with all five commissioners voting aye.
The Board took the same action for the City of Wabasso, agreeing to sponsor the proposed Front Street and Main Street LRIP submission and to serve as the sponsoring agency, subject to similar financial responsibilities for the city and authorization for the county highway engineer to act as agent.
Separately, the Board approved purchase of a Crafco Roadsaver Meltable Package from Crafco under Minnesota State Contract #264240 for 2026 at $0.63 per pound, freight included.
Why it matters: County sponsorship is required for LRIP applications from small cities and involves a commitment to oversee the project and, if necessary, guarantee the local share. The county’s purchase of road-sealing material supports routine pavement maintenance and winter operations.
Next steps: County staff will act as the agent for LRIP applications, and cities will proceed with LRIP submittal and local cost planning. Procurement for the Roadsaver material will proceed under state contract.
