WISE, Va. — The Wise County Board of Supervisors adopted an amendment to Ordinance #1-2009 on March 12 to increase the partial property tax exemption for elderly and disabled residents from $200 to $300.
The change followed a public hearing in which Walter Crouse told the board the $100 increase was insufficient while Jane Branham, Daniel Rollins and Terry Short spoke in favor of the increase. After the hearing, Supervisor Fred Luntsford moved to amend the ordinance and Supervisor John T. Schoolcraft seconded; the motion was unanimously approved and recorded as Ordinance #3-2026.
Board materials and the motion indicate the increase is intended to provide modest additional relief for qualifying elderly and disabled taxpayers. The minutes do not specify the number of affected households or the estimated fiscal impact on county revenue.
