Board votes unanimously to close Middle College instructional site at Seattle Central

The Seattle School Board voted unanimously on May 13 to approve the closure of the Middle College instructional site at Seattle Central College beginning in the 2026–27 school year. Vice President Briggs moved the action and Director Mizrahi seconded; the roll-call vote recorded all directors in favor.
Superintendent Ben Schoelner clarified the action is a site closure, not a program shutdown: "We are not shutting down a school. We are shutting down one location of that school," he said, and noted students could continue at the Middle College campus on North Seattle College.
Directors asked staff for follow-up on placement plans. Director Mizrahi noted the prior presentation indicated several students would be impacted and asked for updates about where those students would enroll. The superintendent said the number affected was about 10 and that staff would return with more placement details.
The motion passed by unanimous roll call: Director Rankin — Aye; Director Smith — Aye; Director Song — Yes; Vice President Briggs — Aye; Director LaValle — Aye; Director Mizrahi — Aye; President Toph — Aye.
Board members said they expect staff to monitor placements and provide updates to ensure continuity for impacted students.
