At the April 27 council meeting Sarah Hogan Shaw, program director for Impact Montevallo, briefed the Council on two recent public-health developments and local enforcement activity.
Shaw said Gov. Kay Ivey signed SB9, expanding the state definition of smoking to include electronic nicotine delivery systems and thereby banning vaping in public spaces under the state law change. She described that change as a statutory expansion of the definition of smoking rather than a new municipal ordinance.
Shaw also reported the Alabama Attorney General issued a cease-and-desist order against kratom-containing products after independent laboratory testing detected mitragynine in several items marketed for pain relief or relaxation. She listed product names that were tested in the AG’s review and said the substance was not disclosed to consumers in those samples. According to Shaw, School Resource Officer Holloway delivered written cease-and-desist notices to Montevallo retail outlets and opened lines of communication with store staff about the findings.
The Impact Montevallo report included routine program notes: SRO Basic Training support, upcoming Safe Schools Conference attendance, and a reminder of end-of-school activities for youth. No city action was requested; the presentation served to inform the Council and public about statewide rule changes and local enforcement activity.
