Staff to approve straightforward site plans as council limits zoning changes; comprehensive-plan update progressing

Planning staff briefed the commission May 14 that City Council accepted a negative recommendation on broader zoning-ordinance changes but approved minor administrative edits to the subdivision ordinance, leaving final plat approvals with the commission. Council also authorized staff to approve routine site plans that meet all requirements, which is why some commercial site plans (when straightforward) will no longer require commission action.
Staff said they are working to improve public access to a new development story map on the city website to make approvals and projects more visible to residents. Planning staff (Aubrey) reported that the Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee met April 30 for a two-hour workshop; the consultant is synthesizing input and starting to draft the plan. Staff said they expect the comprehensive plan to be complete by summer or early fall and plan public town-hall meetings once the draft is ready.
Commissioners were asked to hold in mind conference dates (APA Texas Chapter, Oct. 14–16, 2026) and to be prepared for future public engagement on the comprehensive plan.
Next steps: staff will administer straightforward site-plan approvals under council authorization, work to make the development story map more visible, and continue consultant work on the comprehensive plan with town-hall engagement to follow.
