Laredo Council agrees to February workshop on pediatric intensive-care options

Council members agreed to convene a February workshop to examine options for bringing pediatric intensive-care capacity to Laredo, following presentations from the city public-health director and local health providers.
Dr. Richard Chamberlain, Laredo Public Health Director, presented a data profile showing Laredo operates well below Texas and U.S. provider ratios and lacks local pediatric specialty and critical-care capacity. The presentation said Laredowould need dozens of additional pediatric providers to meet state and national norms and that many pediatric patients are currently transferred out of the region.
Gateway Community Health Center representatives and other speakers recommended a workshop to explore feasible models, including a county hospital district, public-private partnerships, targeted recruitment incentives and potential ballot measures to secure funding. Council directed staff to schedule the workshop in February and to invite county partners and health-system stakeholders to examine legal, funding and operational pathways.
Council members emphasized that money alone would not create specialty clinicians and pushed for combined strategies (facility planning plus provider recruitment and quality-of-life incentives) so any new facility could operate safely and sustainably.
