Board hears capital-project progress as phase 2 estimate sits near $44 million

Assistant Superintendent for Business Christine Griffin introduced the district's capital-project team and gave trustees a status update on the multi‑phase campus improvement plan.
Project representatives reported that phase 1 is roughly halfway complete, with demolition and framing finished at the operation center and interior mechanical/electrical/plumbing work progressing; interior finishes are slated to begin soon. A previously separate parking-lot item ("phase 1.5") was pulled forward into phase 1 to replace spots lost to construction.
On phase 2, the team said schematic design and design development are complete and the current construction estimate is about $44,000,000—above the original estimate. The presenters said they expect competitive bidding could bring costs closer to budget but cautioned the figure is an estimate while documents complete. Phase 3 remains in design development; an earlier scope estimate was about $21,000,000 and the team said it is still refining that scope.
Work items described in phase‑1 progress included site grading and new storm chambers, clock and building-notification cabling installed in multiple buildings, and preparatory site work for the turf field. The team noted the Field 7 area needs drainage work and topsoil stripping before turf installation can proceed; good weather this week allowed crews to make measurable progress on the parking-area site work and curbing.
Trustees asked about traffic signage and safety for the new parking/entrance configuration. Project staff said the reformatting will not change traffic direction but will provide a more generous turning radius and align the new parking-lot entrance with the existing exit; additional signage was described as a local operational decision tied to the final traffic pattern.
Trustees also asked about solar. Project presenters said small rooftop solar arrays are planned as part of the designs for the high school and intermediate school in later phases; the district is considering broader energy studies that could expand solar or other technologies as the projects and studies progress.
The board received the update; no formal vote was required on the presentation itself. The district plans to continue design refinements and to seek SED (State Education Department) approval where needed before breaking ground on later phases.
