Pequannock board hears plan to raise about $70,000 for inclusive preschool playground

"We're looking to raise probably another $70,000 to help us get to our goal," Dr. Portis said, describing meetings that included two local construction professionals, representatives from Burke (the playground equipment vendor) and Ben Schafer, the project's vendor contact. Portis said the committee walked the planned site, identified safety‑clearance and ADA requirements, and discussed surfacing and enclosure needs.
Portis said in‑kind contributions from community members have been offered for demolition and installation work, and that the district would set up a website to display a running fundraising total. He also noted that local groups including Girl Scouts and a partner named Shamrock are planning fundraisers to support the effort.
The superintendent emphasized the project's goal of making the playground accessible both during school hours for 3‑ and 4‑year‑old children and as a community resource for families from other towns.
Board members did not vote on spending at the workshop; fundraising and vendor coordination will continue and the project will return for additional board review and any required approvals.
