Tazewell County IDA hears $1.1 billion project pipeline, approves routine finance items

Tim Danielson, economic development director for Tazewell County, told the Industrial Development Authority on April 8 that staff are tracking eight active potential projects that together represent about $1.1 billion in capital investment, roughly 125 net new jobs and an estimated $8.3 million in annual payroll.
Board members said staff will split outreach geographically with Ashley Harris working the county’s west side and Danielson working the east; the department is contacting businesses to identify needs and set meetings. Danielson also reported receipt of a letter from Jan Cordle of the Tazewell County PSA stating the Town of Richlands is now in good standing with the PSA.
On routine financial business the board approved the April invoice summary, which included a payment to VCEDA after Clinch River Forest Products submitted a $95,238.16 check to pay off a VCEDA loan. The board also approved the March 2026 General and Grant account bank statements and ratified a prior poll vote to sponsor a table at the Chamber of Commerce annual dinner on April 10; the sponsorship authorization was ratified by a 5–0 vote. Several board members indicated who would attend the event.
IDA counsel noted that while Treasurer Melanie Protti‑Lawrence was permitted to listen by phone, counsel had advised remote participation did not allow her to vote. The board discussed infrastructure records and housing initiatives under other business: Danielson said groups want the county’s water and sewer plans in digital form and said Tazewell PSA reported it does not have them digitally; Rick Snapp and Rick Chitwood said Thompson and Litton may have the plans and could provide them with PSA permission. Danielson said discussions with housing project applicants continue and a consultant has been hired to study the area.
The meeting was adjourned at approximately 5:00 p.m.; the board’s next scheduled meeting is May 13, 2026 at 2:00 p.m.
