Masuda Middle named 2026 California Distinguished School; Fountain Valley students honored with Lighthouse Awards

The Fountain Valley School District Board of Education used part of its May 14 meeting to honor students and schools across the district. Board President Paul announced that Masuda Middle School had been named a 2026 California Distinguished School, praising staff and students for sustained achievement and a "sustained culture of high expectations."

Zachary Hargy, representing State Senator Tony Strickland, offered a congratulatory recognition and presented a congressional certificate of recognition from U.S. Rep. Derek Tran to Masuda Middle School.

The board then presented Lighthouse Leadership Awards — the district’s recognition tied to seven guiding principles including perseverance, citizenship and leadership — to a slate of students from Cox Elementary and other sites. Principals and classroom teachers offered short remarks highlighting each student’s contributions: Janet, the principal of Cox Elementary, described nominees as "thoughtful" and "exceptional," and teachers cited examples of perseverance, leadership and improvement for individual students.

The district paused for photographs with board members and families following the recognitions. Presentations also included other schools and grade levels, with teachers noting classroom‑level growth and leadership experiences.

What’s next: The ceremony concluded and the board continued its business; site principals and the district will maintain records of recognitions and share photos and certificates with families and the community.
