Peraza described the program’s structure — multiple teams that practice and compete after school — and detailed a recent example of a student who received a full scholarship after being scouted at a tournament. He said classified staff who work in the program face limits supervising students for extended periods and that a dedicated certificated or properly assigned coach is needed to sustain competition and student support. "We don't want to squander this potential for the students," Peraza said.
Trustees thanked him for the comment and district staff acknowledged the program's community support. The board did not take an immediate action but heard the request as part of public comment.
