Miss McPherson, speaking to the Monroe County School Board, outlined a districtwide "kindergarten kickoff" aimed at welcoming the class of 2039 and improving early-childhood readiness.
The campaign included radio and newspaper advertising (the presentation cited 126 radio spots and two weeks of newspaper ads in April), distribution of a math-and-literacy board game called "Playing Our Way to K" to registrants, and partnerships with local organizations. McPherson said community partners donated over $28,000 in time and financial support for the initiative.
The district emphasized outreach in multiple languages. Superintendent (speaker 2) told the board the district will send weekly family-facing videos in English, Spanish and Haitian Creole so that limited English at home will not be a barrier to kindergarten readiness. McPherson also described school events that provided activity bags, bike helmets and classroom visits to parents and children.
Board members praised the kickoff as a way to increase enrollment and support students entering school. The presentation noted that full-day kindergarten programs are linked to higher long-term achievement and lower retention rates and that the district is preparing for an expected large incoming class.
The report did not provide a line-item breakdown of the $28,000 donation. The district said it will continue outreach throughout the summer and track registrations and readiness measures.
