Board member and finance committee representative said the district is projecting a FY27 operating deficit of approximately $3 million and that the committee recommends closing about $1.8 million of that gap through budget reductions while using reserve funds for the balance.
"To close the $3,000,000 gap for the coming year, is that we account for about $1,800,000 of that through budget reductions. And we cover the remainder with our reserves," the finance committee representative said, describing work that has included $19 million of reductions since 2021 and a strategy to build reserves in prior years to weather expected deficits.
Committee members emphasized the current reductions are focused on operating adjustments and accounting shifts and are not targeting staff reductions for FY27; they warned, however, that personnel comprises roughly 80% of district costs and sustained cuts or extended use of reserves will eventually require broader decisions on staffing levels.
Board members noted the renewal of the operating referendum is important to the long-term funding picture and that additional reductions are likely in future years if state funding trends continue.
