Enrollment dips to 4,384; board warned state tax proposals could cut district revenue

An administrator told the Belton School District No. 124 board on Oct. 15 that the district’s total enrollment as of Oct. 13 is 4,384 students, with K–12 enrollment at 4,107. Kindergarten was the smallest grade with 287 students; the district reported it is down 69 students overall compared with the same point last year (down 66 K–12 without grace).
In the legislative update that followed, the superintendent briefed the board on state proposals under consideration and earlier special-session activity in Jefferson City. The superintendent said proposals to eliminate personal property tax (taxes on items such as cars, boats and trailers) would be fiscally damaging at the local level and estimated the district would lose about $597,000 annually under an elimination scenario. The superintendent also cited a county-provided estimate of approximately $600,000 related to Senate Bill 190 (senior-citizen property tax) and warned that related stadium legislation (Senate Bill 3) could cap certain property-tax growth and potentially reduce district revenue further, with a figure of about $6–$7 million per year discussed as a broader illustrative impact.
Board members were advised to monitor these proposals as the legislative session begins in January and in any intervening special sessions. No board action was taken on the legislative items during this meeting; the presentation was informational.
