Health officer requests short overlap training for incoming WIC coordinator ahead of June retirement

Jim Henry, Lapeer County Health Officer/Director, told the Personnel Committee on April 2 that both Registered Dietitians in the Health Department are retiring this year and that one has already left. He said the second Registered Dietitian is scheduled to retire June 26, 2026, and asked the committee to authorize a temporary overlap training period of up to two weeks for a newly hired WIC Coordinator/Registered Dietitian.
Henry said he has already filled one vacancy with a non‑registered dietitian who is working to become registered and that an overlap would aid training and continuity. He stated that any potential cost for the overlap would be charged to the Health Department’s budget, account 221.245.730‑010, and would not require additional funding from the county’s general fund.
Commissioner Greg Wise moved to recommend that the Health Department be authorized to fill the WIC Coordinator/Registered Dietitian position (Pay Grade 20) with a temporary overlap training period of up to two weeks with the current WIC Coordinator to address the anticipated retirement effective June 26, 2026. Commissioner Kevin Knisely supported the motion; it carried unanimously.
The committee minutes record the recommendation and the funding account to be used; the matter will go to the Full Board for final action if required by county hiring policy.
