The Council voted unanimously to adopt Resolution 26-45 approving the 2026–2027 labor agreement between the City of Coon Rapids and Law Enforcement Labor Services, Inc., representing the police sergeants bargaining unit.
HR Manager and Assistant City Manager Roth explained contract language allowing employees to supplement paid medical leave with accrued sick or vacation leave, noting that provision was intentionally negotiated into the contract. Councilmember Brad Greskowiak questioned whether the Minnesota Paid Family and Medical Leave Act already permitted such supplementation and whether the contract extended benefits beyond statute; Roth explained the negotiated contract language clarifies and secures that benefit for the bargaining unit.
City Manager Stemwedel said the agreement will increase costs by approximately $73,000 from 2025 to 2026 and by about $57,000 from 2026 to 2027, for a total estimated increase of roughly $130,000 over the two-year agreement. Council asked for cost estimates consistent with prior labor agreements; staff provided those figures and the Council approved the resolution unanimously.
