Paw Paw council approves parks board amendment, event permit, Briggs Dam pay request and pension change

The Paw Paw Village Council met March 9, 2026, at the Paw Paw District Library and approved a package of routine and fiscal measures, including an ordinance amendment for the Parks & Recreation Board, a large construction pay request and a change to employee pension contributions.
Trustee Donne Rohr moved to adopt the proposed Parks and Recreation Board ordinance amendment; Trustee David McQueen supported the motion and all members present voted yes. The minutes record formal adoption but do not include the ordinance text.
The council unanimously approved the Paw Paw Days event and associated road closures for Saturday, July 25, with a motion from Trustee Rohr and support from Pro Tem Douglas Craddock. The minutes set the event hours and the closure window from 5:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
On infrastructure spending, the council approved Pay Request No.6 from Milbocker Construction for Briggs Dam work in the amount of $153,710.00. Trustee Rohr moved the payment and Trustee Nicolas Martinez supported the motion; all members present voted yes.
On employee benefits, the council adopted an amended MERS Defined Benefit Plan Agreement for administrative employees, increasing employee contributions from 10% to 11% as provided in their collective bargaining agreement. Trustee Rohr moved the adoption, with support from Trustee Holly Hamilton; the motion carried with all voting members in favor.
Council also adopted Resolution 26-06, authorizing contract no. #25-5656 with the Michigan Department of Transportation and naming authorized signatories; the roll call vote recorded Trustees Nicolas Martinez, Holly Hamilton, Douglas Craddock, President Roman Plaszczak, David McQueen and Donne Rohr voting yes.
Financial approvals on the agenda included a claims list for March 9, 2026 totaling $597,468.38, which the council approved on a motion by Trustee Hamilton supported by Trustee McQueen.
Staff and council members made several informational announcements: Director of Public Services Tim Brandys said Riverworks will be finishing the Maple Island Bridge project in the coming weeks; Village Manager Bryan Myrkle reported discussions with Sol America about a potential solar project but recorded that federal funding reductions have changed the fiscal outlook; and Police Chief Eric Rottman announced a $5,000 Walmart grant to support the Shop with a Cop event and the department’s purchase of two LifeVac anti-choking devices.
The meeting adjourned at 8:39 p.m.; Clerk Karla Tacy noted she will not attend the next council meeting.
