MSD Boone Township board recognizes students, names athletic director and approves calendar and pay changes

The MSD Boone Township Board of Education on May 12 recognized student and staff achievements, introduced new athletic staff and approved several routine items designed to support students and address staffing shortages.
The board began by honoring third‑grader Max Shannon, who was identified through state iLearn checkpoint scores and named a National Math Star nominee. A staff member who introduced Max told the board he is “in the top 2% of Indiana third graders” and noted that Max has been taking Math 8 with older students and will take Algebra I next year. The board presented Max with a medal and posed for photos.
Representatives of the Hebrew Education Foundation and teachers accepted a series of classroom and program grants. The grants will fund items including a kindergarten read‑aloud library update, travel and expenses for FCCLA students attending nationals, functional movement screening kits for the athletic program, middle‑school esports equipment, photography and videography gear for Media Club and exploratory courses, UFLI assessment tools to target reading intervention, a faster 3‑D printer for the VandalLab, and software to manage individualized health care plans for students with medical needs.
Superintendent Dr. Brooks’ recommended consent agenda (regular meeting minutes, April claims, revenue report and personnel report) was approved after a motion and a second; members voted “aye” and the motion carried. The board also introduced Meredith Dane as the new high school athletic director; another introduced himself as Gary Davis and offered brief background remarks.
In new business the board unanimously approved overnight field trips for the cross‑country team (summer camp in Bloomington) and the wrestling team (October camp at Turkey Run). Donations to the baseball, softball, basketball, track programs and FCCLA were accepted. The board approved a recommendation to pay unlicensed assistive personnel an additional $2 per hour while performing certain duties (such as supervising students on field trips when a nurse is not present), following required training. The board also approved a provision allowing some retired or higher‑rate substitute bus drivers to retain their current pay when they sub, provided they commit to sub at least 10 times per year to help address driver shortages.
The 2027–28 school calendar was approved; under that calendar the first day of school would be Aug. 11, 2027, and the last day would fall before Memorial Day on May 24, 2028. Board members said the calendar aligns closely with neighboring South County schools to accommodate shared services.
Administrators reported spring concerts, AP testing, and other culminating activities. One administrator tallied that the district recognized 95 students and two teachers for the year. District staff also said the second round of iRead (a summer administration for third graders and some second graders) is underway and that iLearn scores will be released in summer; iLearn science scores were reported a few percentage points higher than the previous year. Superintendent Dr. Brooks announced that district employee Jerry Bechtel has announced his retirement and will be recognized at a future meeting.
The board offered brief closing remarks and adjourned.
