Assembly elects two members to Board of Regents; members praise nominees and flag representational concerns

The New York State Assembly on Feb. 24 adopted Concurrent Resolution A.978 electing two members to the Board of Regents.
Assemblymember Benedetto introduced the resolution and described the Regents' broad responsibilities for public education, higher education oversight, libraries, museums and professional licensing. He noted there are 17 Regents and framed the election as a longstanding tradition.
Assemblymember Hindman highlighted the credentials of the two nominees, in particular Dr. Janice Shorenstein, and acknowledged the staff and screening process used to assemble candidates. "This kind of pedigree is what we should be looking for for those who serve on the Board of Regents," she said.
Assemblymember Smith thanked nominees and recognized the long service of an outgoing regent. He also raised a process concern about the allocation of Regents seats across judicial districts, noting some districts represent far larger populations than others and suggesting the state could consider a more equitable apportionment in the future.
Following party conference statements, the clerk recorded the vote (Ayes 94, Noes 47) and the concurrent resolution was adopted.
