The Springfield City Municipal Regional Planning Commission on May 7 unanimously approved the site plan for Fire Station Number 3, a proposed facility at 2663 South Main Street intended to improve emergency response coverage on the city’s south side.
Miss Durham, Community Development Director, told the commission the proposed station sits on approximately 3 acres in MRO zoning and that staff finds the plan consistent with zoning, subdivision regulations and the city’s comprehensive growth plan. "Staff recommends approval of the site plan for Fire Station Number 3, contingent upon all remaining staff concerns being adequately addressed prior to the issuance of permits," she said.
Commissioners questioned materials and apparatus capacity. The fire department representative confirmed the bays are sized to accommodate the department’s ladder truck and to store reserve apparatus. Commissioners also discussed the station’s architectural features shown in renderings; staff said remaining comments were minor technical items that the project engineer is addressing.
With those conditions noted, a commissioner moved to approve the site plan and the commission voted 8-0 in favor.
The decision authorizes staff to continue reviewing final technical corrections before permits are issued; no final building permits or construction start dates were recorded at the meeting.
