McDonald County says FEMA inspections complete for Dead End Lane; permits must be secured before repairs

McDonald County commissioners received an update Aug. 18 that Federal Emergency Management Agency inspections for the Dead End Lane repair project are complete, and county staff must finish permitting and document emergency measures before full construction can begin.
County staff told the commission that a mitigation representative recently met with county officials and that three inches of gravel have been placed on the road as an interim repair. Staff also requested maintenance records for the roadway be reviewed as part of the project file.
The minutes state the planned repairs will be constructed above the water line; base-rock work is slated to begin using larger rip rap along the bank to stabilize the slope and roadway. Environmental and Historic Preservation (EHP) permitting must be finalized before construction may proceed, according to the record.
The county additionally reported that FEMA has requested documentation on emergency protective measures taken to clear roadways after the April storm damage. FEMA is expected to follow up with a detailed project plan that will include a tracker for ongoing progress. The minutes note a certificate of liability insurance was submitted to FEMA Program Delivery Manager Jason Stalder.
No formal motions or votes on the project are recorded in the Aug. 18 minutes. The document records that commissioners had no further business and adjourned; the commission will reconvene Aug. 20, 2025.
Next steps for the Dead End Lane project are finalizing EHP permitting, completing the county review of maintenance records, and awaiting FEMA’s project delivery plan and tracker before contracting or commencing larger-scale construction.
