Council approves bike-day grant, Fair Housing resolution and EMPG reimbursements

At its May 11 meeting the New Milford Town Council approved several grant acceptances and related resolutions. The council unanimously accepted a $5,000 award from the Connecticut Department of Transportation in partnership with the Western Connecticut Council of Governments to host a 'New Milford Bike Day' that will provide bicycles, helmets and reflective vests to children from low-income families. Ms. Francis moved to accept the award; the motion passed unanimously.
The council also unanimously adopted the annual Fair Housing Resolution required for continued eligibility for Small Cities CDBG funds. The resolution affirms the town’s commitment to federal and state fair-housing laws and designates the chief executive (or designee) to assist individuals who allege discriminatory housing practices and to advise on filing complaints with CHRO or HUD.
Additionally, the council approved a resolution authorizing the mayor to accept reimbursement of up to $15,551 through the 2025 Emergency Management Performance Grant (EMPG) for Emergency Operations Center staffing and related emergency management activities for the October 1, 2025–September 30, 2026 funding period. Officials said EMPG funds can reimburse staffing, equipment, training and EOC activations.
Other routine approvals included the Youth Agency’s acceptance of a $750 SAMHSA stipend for substance-prevention initiatives and capital transfers to fund the JPCC roof project. The council also authorized a grading and drainage easement with DEEP for the Still River Drive/Pumpkin Hill Road intersection improvement.
Votes on these items were recorded as unanimous where noted; motions were generally made by Councilor Katy Francis and seconded by Paul Murphy or others as listed in the minutes.
