Council approves appointments, bridge authorization and police contract extension; sets school-bus hearing

At its March 9 meeting the New Milford Town Council approved routine and project actions, including appointments to local boards, authorization of a state-funded bridge project, extension of the police chief's contract, approval of community road closures, and scheduling a public hearing on a proposed municipal school-bus violation enforcement program.

The council approved appointments to the Zoning Board of Appeals, Board of Finance (alternate), and Library Board of Trustees; Attorney Joseph Mortelliti administered the oaths at 8:06 p.m. The council also authorized Mayor Bass to sign documents for the Wheaton Road Bridge Project after Public Works Director Jack Healy explained the Connecticut DOT acquired two small parcels and that the work is fully funded by DOT (no New Milford taxpayer funds). The motion to authorize the mayor passed unanimously.

The council entered executive session at 8:08 p.m. with Town Attorney Mortelliti and Police Chief Spencer Cerruto; no votes were taken in executive session. After returning to open session, the council voted unanimously to extend Chief Cerruto's contract another four years; Mayor Bass said the extension reflected "thanks to Chief Cerruto's excellent work."

The council approved two event road closures for the Ostomy Awareness Foundation Moonlight 5K (May 15) and the Village Center for the Arts 26th anniversary celebration (May 19). The council also moved and approved a motion to set a public hearing on a Municipal School Bus Violation System for March 23, 2026, at 6:30 p.m.
