New Milford council approves small grants, appointments and a library donation; finance director reports $1 million in state aid

The New Milford Town Council unanimously approved a set of routine items and received a fiscal update at its March 2 special meeting.
Councilor Katy Francis moved and Councilor Paul Murphy seconded approval of the consent agenda, which included the February 9 meeting minutes and tax refunds totaling $302.89. The motion passed unanimously.
The council approved acceptance of a $1,000 grant from the Connecticut Office of the Arts for Cultural District marketing and logo development. "Ms. Francis moved to approve the acceptance of a grant of $1,000.00 from the State of Connecticut Office of the Arts to be used for marketing activities, including development of a Cultural District logo," the minutes record. The council also approved several appointments: James P. Delancy to a scenic-road-related slot, Steve Donahue to the Scenic Road Committee, and Detective Dru Sin to the Youth Agency Advisory Board to replace a retiring officer.
The New Milford Public Library asked the council to accept a donation of a Mah Jongg set valued at $80 from Lisa DiMaria; the council approved the donation. Finance Director Olga Melnikov presented the January financial report and told the council revenues are on schedule, tax collections are at 96 percent and the town received an additional $1 million from the state. Melnikov said the audit was completed and filed before Dec. 31 and reported no material weaknesses; she noted overtime costs in public works and parks and recreation as exceptions to otherwise appropriated expenses.
Mayor Pete Bass offered community announcements and a schedule of upcoming events. He also asked MaryJane Lundgren about support needed after a recent congregate-housing fire; Lundgren said furniture, rugs, clothing and food will be needed and that displaced residents remain out of their units.
Councilor Rolando Castro moved to adjourn at 7:29 p.m.; the motion was seconded by Katy Francis and passed unanimously.
