Plan Commission asks staff for presentation and zoning definition for AI data centers

A Plan Commission member raised concerns March 3 about the lack of uniform countywide zoning for data centers and asked the commission to address AI data centers proactively.
The commissioner said Brown County has no consistent definition or nuisance standards for data centers and noted that some nearby jurisdictions are considering moratoria. "If it's going to fall back on us ... I think it's very important for us to kind of understand what powers this board has, both in regulatory powers and particularly with nuisance ordinances," the commissioner said.
Aaron, the village staff member, responded that he is working on a zoning-code update that includes a new definition for data centers and certain performance standards. "I have updated a definition for data centers. And we have certain performance standards in there as well," he said, and staff agreed to put the item on a future agenda so the commission can have a more detailed discussion.
Commissioners also tentatively scheduled the April meeting for April 9 due to an April 7 election and room availability, so the data-center item could appear at a future meeting once staff completes the draft code language.
