County roundup: hazard mitigation plan awarded, E911 resolution adopted, Start Small and COLA payments approved

At its Feb. 10 meeting the Houghton County Board awarded a $239,400 hazard mitigation plan contract, adopted an updated E911 administrative plan, allocated $41,000 to Start Small, authorized a 2% COLA for the sheriff’s department and retirees, and approved several appointments and payments.
The Houghton County Board of Commissioners took several administrative and procurement actions at its Feb. 10 meeting, including awarding a regional hazard mitigation plan contract, adopting E911 administrative updates and approving multiple appropriations and contracts.
Emergency Manager Chris VanArsdale recommended awarding the five-county hazard mitigation plan contract to the Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region (WUPPDR) for $239,400 after five bids were received; the board approved the award by roll call vote. Under-sheriff Jon Giacchino presented required administrative updates to the Houghton County E911 Emergency Telephone Service District Final Plan; the board adopted Resolution #26-01 to make those administrative findings and directed the county clerk to circulate the update to suppliers and PSAPs.
The board authorized $41,000 to the Start Small program (ARPA-funded commitment previously approved), approved an RFP for accounting services to reconcile cash balances following an employee departure, and authorized a 2% COLA retroactive to Jan. 1, 2026 for the sheriff’s department and retirees. The board also approved an RFP for the Sharon Avenue property, appointed commissioners to regional boards, accepted a lawsuit for insurance handling, authorized $6,000 for Circuit Court electrical work, approved a services agreement with Superior Tech Wizards LLC (one commissioner opposed), and approved Tri-County Public Defenders payment of $65,524.82 for January.
Several votes were unanimous; the Superior Tech Wizards contract carried with one 'no' vote from Commissioner Joel Keranen. The meeting concluded after public comment and routine announcements.
