Planner suggests feasibility study, EGLE grant for transfer-station recycling hub

Brendon Presnell of WUPPDR presented to the Board by Microsoft Teams on May 11, describing operational costs and a possible capital path for Houghton County’s aging transfer station. Presnell said current costs are roughly $210 per ton for waste disposal and $30 per ton for recycling, and that recycling collection should cost less than transporting materials to distant facilities.
He recommended commissioning a feasibility study for a recycling tipping floor and preparing a capital-implementation plan that could allow the county to serve as a regional hub for recycling. Presnell said grant funding is available through EGLE and cited approximately $450,000 in potential grant support; he recommended applying for grants and returning to the Board with study results and a project plan. Chairman Tikkanen directed Commissioners Janssen and Keranen to work with Presnell on next steps.
No formal procurement or funding decision was made during the session; staff were asked to pursue grant opportunities and next-step planning.
