Commissioners reviewed and approved an updated mission statement and a companion internal expectations document aimed at clarifying volunteer commitments and meeting participation.
The new mission language frames Spark (the Parks & Recreation Commission) as “a dedicated group of volunteers committed to enhancing community life in Sykesville and protecting our parks” and outlines expectations that commissioners aim to volunteer at least four events annually where possible, notify the group in advance of absences and review meeting recordings if they miss a session. Commissioners discussed flexible exceptions for life events and the process for follow-up when a member is persistently absent; staff liaison involvement and, as a last resort, mayoral follow-up were noted.
A motion to approve the expectations and mission statement with recommended edits was made, seconded and approved by voice vote. Commissioners also agreed on a process to draft standard operating procedures (SOPs) for recurring events — assigning event leads to draft and store SOPs in a shared Google Drive and to bring final drafts back for commission review.
Next steps: staff and volunteer leads will incorporate the agreed edits, circulate the revised documents for final review and report back at the next meeting; leads will begin drafting SOPs after events this season.
