Sykesville Parks & Recreation commissioners on March 26 confirmed plans for the town’s April 11 Easter egg hunt while pressing organizers to address volunteer staffing and accessibility. The group said parking will be staged at Sykesville Middle School and discussed using the Cooper Drive driveway as a centralized starting area if the commission decides to close it for staging.
Commissioners debated start-line placement to avoid crowding and ensure wheelchair access. One organizer recommended placing four-and-under participants on the lower field and older children on the upper field, and using staggered start times so the course remains manageable. The commissioners also agreed to have volunteers at 8:30 a.m. to assist with parking and to use the event microphone to keep groups organized.
Commissioner Chris, who has led event staffing, described the volunteer picture as “hit or miss,” saying she had “many, many, many people email me” but could only confirm about 10 volunteers at the time of the meeting and asked colleagues to recruit additional help. Commissioners agreed to confirm a list of volunteers (Eric, Chris, Billy, Alex, Candy and others who volunteered during the meeting) and to have at least one announcer to manage category releases.
Organizers discussed how to accommodate families in case of rain, recalling a prior year when the event was held under a gazebo with a small attendance. Members set an internal deadline to decide whether to cancel by about 9 a.m. the morning of the event to avoid sending people on long drives unnecessarily.
Next steps: staff will confirm the middle-school parking permission already reported as approved, finalize the start/age arrangement and circulate volunteer assignments; no formal vote was required at the meeting.
