Southwest ISD certifies May 2 trustee election, swears in two trustees and elects board officers

The Southwest Independent School District board unanimously approved the canvass of votes from the May 2, 2026 school board election and declared James Gonzalez and Jose Diaz the winners. A presenter reviewed both the overall results and required precinct-by-precinct totals before the board moved and approved the canvass by unanimous vote.
The newly elected trustees were sworn in during the meeting. A notary administered the oath of office to Jose Diaz and James Gonzalez, who each responded, “I do,” and were seated as members of the board. After the oath, the board conducted officer elections for the term running May 2026 through May 2027. Sylvester Vasquez was nominated and confirmed as board president; the board elected Ida as vice president; Florenda Bernol was elected secretary; and James Sullivan was elected assistant secretary. Trustees confirmed the votes on these officer motions as unanimous at the meeting.
The actions finalize board leadership for the coming year and allow the board to move into a scheduled team-of-eight training session. The superintendent and staff will incorporate the newly elected officers into procedural communications and will present any updated materials at a subsequent public meeting if needed.
