Council initiates annual renewals for street-light and landscape maintenance districts

The City Council voted on May 12 to initiate annual assessment proceedings for two existing maintenance districts.
For Street Light Maintenance District No. 1 (SMD), staff reported the district covers 2,996 public street lights and that the March CPI (3.4%) will be used to compute the annual increase for the equivalent-benefit-unit (EBU) assessment. The single-family EBU assessment would rise from $50.63 to $52.35 in Zone A under that CPI. Council adopted three required resolutions to initiate the renewal, approve the preliminary engineers report and set a June 23 public hearing to consider the final levy.
For Landscape Maintenance District No. 1 (LMD), staff said the program affects 326 properties across seven benefit zones and that the council may apply a CPI adjustment not to exceed 5% under existing resolution authority. Staff said the city will subsidize shortfalls in a few zones for the coming year; the total city subsidy shown in the packet was $33,494. Council adopted the three resolutions for the LMD to begin the annual renewal and set a June 23 hearing.
Both sets of resolutions passed unanimously (5–0). Staff will return on June 23 with final engineers reports and a request to approve the levy and collection for each district.
