Public works staff reviewed the city’s snow and ice operations and highlighted national recognition for the department’s response to an historic winter storm.
The department logged roughly 30 winter events this season and used about 700 tons of rock salt, staff said. The city trialed a 'solar salt' product that reduced sediment in the brine maker, saving cleaning and maintenance time. Staff described a sustained multi-day blizzard they called the largest in 138 years; crews operated long shifts to maintain 24-hour coverage and to remove accumulated snow downtown.
The city’s snow-and-ice control program was recognized by the American Public Works Association at the state level and was forwarded to the national competition; De Pere was one of six nationally recognized entries out of about 39 submissions. "It's a testament to the operations of what we do," staff said. The board praised the crews and indicated the council would recognize the department at an upcoming meeting.
