Board reviews revised student code of conduct; first reading set for public comment

The Caledonia-Mumford Central School District board received a first reading May 12 of an updated student code of conduct designed to align district policy with current New York State guidance and clarify behavioral expectations.
An administrator identified in the agenda as “Miss Aswith” led the presentation and was joined by Jessica, the acting elementary principal. They said the draft highlights several key changes: clarified definitions, strengthened DASA (Dignity for All Students Act) language to include cyberbullying and social-media conduct, updated definitions around electronic-device misuse and district acceptable-use expectations, and a shift toward progressive, instructional and restorative discipline practices.
"The goal here was to create a safer, more respectful learning environment for all students," the presenter said while walking board members through the draft; the minutes note new text is shown in blue and strikeouts show deletions. The board was told the full code appears in meeting backup materials and that the draft will be posted on the district website for a 30-day public comment period before the board takes action. The superintendent said the board needs the updated code in effect before summer school begins.
The revision work also included streamlining dress-code language (removing COVID-era language), clarifying progressive-discipline procedures with developmentally appropriate responses, and updating employee and student-rights language to improve clarity for families and staff.
Next steps: the board will accept public comments during the 30-day posting period and schedule a subsequent board action after reviewing feedback and any final edits.
