Board approves elementary abatement and greenlights middle-school renovation after debate

The board approved a motion to proceed with the abatement and classroom carpet tile work and asked staff to return with firm quotes for exterior paint and a proposed stage.
Middle school HVAC change orders: Project managers explained that some rooftop and site units had to be relocated to preserve windows and sightlines and that additional electrical routing (about 200 feet) and ductwork adjustments were required. A presented change order of $42,610 (plus related items) addresses power routing and unit siting; administration reported the overall HBAC/HVAC project still projects to finish below the original $5.88 million bid (estimated final cost ~ $5.2M with contingencies held).
Middle-school carpeting debate and final vote: The meeting then shifted into a lengthy debate over whether to carpet only classrooms or also include hallways. Arguments in favor of carpeting hallways cited sound reduction, safety and long-term uniformity; opponents raised concerns about stain/maintenance, vacuuming costs and whether the additional outlay was the best use of maintenance funds. Administrators warned scheduling and procurement timelines were tight and that delaying all work could raise costs. After discussion, the board voted 4–2 in favor of proceeding with the full middle-school project — classrooms, hallways and approved change orders — so contractors could schedule and complete the work this summer.
