Students honored; student reps report improved attendance and raise busing complaints

The board presented Connecticut Association of Boards of Education student leadership awards to recipients from multiple schools across the district; Jan Frenis announced winners by school. Student representative Aiden Mahia, representing Crosby High School and the Early College High School program, told the board he will attend Columbia University in the fall and summarized school performance: “Currently, over 85% of our grade nine students are on track receiving passing grades in six or more of their classes.” He said preliminary grade 11 SAT scores are encouraging and chronic absenteeism is the lowest since in‑person return after the pandemic.
Student representative Arhan Smiley highlighted extracurricular successes — girls softball and baseball nearing state tournaments, boys tennis qualifying for the team state tournament — and reported operational concerns: “Many students report buses being late, packed, and at times failing to even stop at their bus stops.” Board members acknowledged the transportation issue and thanked the student representatives for their reports.
In other student news, Crosby has a new outdoor classroom, opened a success center and completed renovations to student bathrooms, the superintendent said. The board celebrated student awards, early‑college scholar recognitions and district educator honors. No formal board action was taken on the student reports; transport and facility matters were noted for staff follow up.
