Albuquerque Public Schools board adopts agenda, moves into executive session on purchases

The Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education unanimously adopted the May 13, 2026 special meeting agenda and then voted to convene an executive session to discuss certain purchases, the board said during a brief meeting on Thursday.

Courtney Jackson, board member, moved “I move we adopt the May 13, 2026 special board of education meeting agenda.” Heather Benvitas, board member, seconded the motion. By roll call Janella Stoga, Rebecca Benson, Heather Benvitas, Joshua Martinez, Oria Bowman, Courtney Jackson and Ronaldo Tommorito each voted yes and the motion carried.

Shortly afterward President Morita announced the board would move into a closed executive session “as authorized by the Open Meetings Act to discuss certain purchases as allowed under section 10-15-1H6 and procurement code section 13-116.” Board member Heather Benvitas moved the executive-session motion and Courtney Jackson seconded. The motion passed by the same unanimous roll-call vote.

President Morita told attendees that “the meeting will reconvene to open session after the executive session, at which time the board has an option to vote on a vendor,” and asked those not part of the executive session to leave the meeting. Meeting staff had earlier noted the session was being streamed on YouTube and asked speakers to speak clearly so closed captions would be accurate.

The transcript records the statute citation and procurement-code references as presented aloud; the board did not discuss purchase details or name a vendor in the open session. The executive session was authorized under the Open Meetings Act language cited and procurement-code references provided on the record; any subsequent public vote on a vendor would occur when the board returns to open session.
