Classified staff, CSEA representatives urge San Marino Unified to consider 10% raise for essential workers

Multiple classified employees and representatives from CSEA addressed the board during the public-comment period on May 12, urging the district to consider a 10% salary increase for classified staff.

Alex Tarantula (CSEA member) opened public comment speaking on behalf of a PE instructional aide and said a 10% raise would relieve financial stress and signal the district values classified staff. James Jacobs, who identified himself as president of CSEA Chapter 120 and a 27‑year district employee, read statements from colleagues and outlined hardships including childcare and medical bills, and he represented administrative assistant Courtney Robinson and night custodian Emmer (name read) in his remarks.

Several classified staff spoke directly. Jessica Weisar, a high‑school custodian, described year‑round duties, pandemic-era responsibilities and safety concerns when securing campuses during storms; she said a 10% increase would provide much‑needed stability as a single parent. Labor relations representative Matt Horn (CSEA) said the union supports district funding efforts such as parcel-tax renewal campaigns, but also asked that members share in the benefits when funding is secured.

Speakers framed their requests as appeals for equity and recognition rather than ultimatums; some offered to partner with the district on funding campaigns. Board members listened but did not vote or issue a formal response to a wage request during the meeting; the speakers asked the board and executive team to consider employee raises in upcoming budget and negotiations work.
