Board approves portables, repairs and multiple vendor agreements amid rising construction costs

The Brea Olinda Unified School District board approved a package of facilities and vendor contracts at its final regular meeting, including purchase of modular classrooms for Ara Vista, several summer restroom repairs at elementary campuses, custom fencing for Brea Canyon High School and procurement/renewals of district software and services.
Facilities Director Jeff reported that two new playground areas at Ara Vista are nearly complete with ADA paths and wood chips installed, though final site grading and backfill remain before student use. The board authorized a piggyback purchase of portable classroom buildings under LAUSD’s competitive bid; trustees approved the portable procurement and a related miscellaneous services agreement for site work. The board also approved restroom repair contracts for multiple elementary campuses and a fencing/gates contract for Brea Canyon; trustees confirmed work will be scheduled during summer breaks and that the contracts are 'not to exceed' the stated amounts.
In a presentation labeled ‘‘thumbs up / thumbs sideways / thumbs down,’’ staff flagged long‑standing DSA (Division of the State Architect) legacy items still requiring closure at Country Hills, the high school outfield fence and other older projects; staff said they will meet with DSA and architects in coming weeks to resolve open tags. Facilities also outlined plans for PAC seating and roofing work slated to finish before the next school year, installation of large HVAC fans (two‑day install window for vendors), and an upcoming bid for the gym floor replacement.
Trustees and staff discussed a broader concern: construction cost escalation. Facilities staff noted that materials such as concrete, steel and copper and rising insurance costs are pushing budgets upward and warned that a project budget set today could cost substantially more in a few years, which may require value engineering or substitutions. The board approved multiple non‑instructional contracts and software renewals in the consent agenda, including the student information system (Aeries), survey tools (Panorama), literacy/assessment tools (Renaissance/AR and STAR) and curriculum supports (Lexia/Voyager).
