Finance Committee recommends using TAR funds to buy 1,000 tons of salt amid price concerns

The Coventry Finance Committee unanimously recommended to the full Town Council on May 11 that the town purchase 1,000 tons of road salt at $89 per ton (about $90,000) and fund the purchase with Town Aid Roads (TAR) funds.
Finance Director Cherie Trahan explained TAR has a balance of approximately $250,000 and the Summer Roads program has $74,000; she recommended using TAR funds because TAR and Summer Roads balances plus next year’s appropriations would leave sufficient funds for planned road work. Trahan noted that CNREF has a much smaller balance and that using TAR is an approved use for salt purchases.
Committee member Peter Larson moved the recommendation and Julie Blanchard seconded. Larson said it "would be foolish of the town to wait to make this purchase when salt prices are expected to go up," and the committee voted unanimously in favor of recommending the purchase to the Town Council.
The recommendation will be forwarded to the full Town Council for final action. Committee members noted that buying now would allow the Department of Public Works to proceed with planned road projects next season.
