The Seward Police Department’s chief presented the department’s annual report and answered council questions about staffing, training and event planning.
The chief said the department retained full staffing and that officers averaged about 14 years of experience. He noted the department handled a homicide investigation that later was taken over by the state patrol; that incident was not reflected in local statistics because the state led the investigation. The chief highlighted reaccreditation by the Nebraska Scribe Commission in 2025 and said the department is monitoring possible state legislative changes to mandatory training hours.
On operations, the chief described planning for the July 4 America’s 250 celebration and preparations for an officer deployment that will affect night‑shift coverage; the department intends to adjust shifts to ensure coverage. The chief also said traffic accidents were down about 25% and credited proactive radar enforcement and high visibility policing.
Council members asked about coordination with York County emergency management and whether equipment or staffing needs are anticipated. The chief said he expects to coordinate with the new York County emergency manager and is reviewing equipment ownership and records access.
A council member moved to accept the annual report; the motion passed unanimously, 7‑0, per the clerk’s recorded vote. The chief invited members to follow up with any further questions offline.
