Gilroy Library renovation plan near permit review; bids expected this summer

City staff updated the commission on the Gilroy Library capital-improvement project, saying the architectural plan set is about 95% complete and will be submitted for permit review this week. The staff report states the intent to issue bid proposals in July or August, pending permits, with construction ideally beginning in the fall.

Commissioners expressed questions about project duration and interior quality controls. One commissioner asked how the library would ensure meeting rooms and study spaces have adequate soundproofing after renovation; staff said the architects and city project managers are mindful of community needs identified during earlier public outreach and are building those requirements into the design and specifications.

Staff indicated the library is expected to continue operating during construction, and that further project scheduling and scope details will be provided as permits are secured and the bidding process advances. The commission asked staff to share plan documents and follow up with additional detail about timelines, expected contractor oversight, and the anticipated duration of phased work.
