Commission opens nominations for May recognition event after debate over repeat winners

The Youth and Community Services Commission debated on Feb. 3 whether recurring winners should be limited at the annual Prevention Service Recognition event scheduled for May 6 at Muzzy Field. After airing concerns that the same individuals and groups have been winning repeatedly, members voted to release the nomination and application materials and begin outreach.
Staff noted past practice: nominees complete confidential applications and, historically, everyone who met the criteria received recognition. A parent complaint about a child who saw another nominee’s award post online prompted discussion about fairness and outreach. Commissioners suggested several options: continue recognizing anyone who meets criteria, create a cap on repeat winners, introduce top awards (three awards for outstanding contributions), or invite repeat winners to play a role in the program (for example, as a keynote speaker or to help run the ceremony).
Members emphasized outreach to diversify nominations so groups that have not previously participated are aware of the opportunity. Youth commissioners were asked to promote the nomination package in schools; staff will circulate the application to high-school guidance offices and other community partners. The commission expects to review nominations and vote at the April meeting.
A motion to open the awards nomination process passed on a voice vote. Staff said they will proceed with the recruitment packet and encouraged commissioners to nominate at least one person or group and to help spread the word.
