Youth commission votes to refer proposed name change to ordinance committee

The Youth and Community Services Commission voted on Feb. 3 to send a staff-drafted ordinance to the city’s ordinance committee that would change the board’s name from the Youth Commission to the Youth and Community Services Commission.

The proposal, presented by staff during the meeting, said the change would align the commission’s title with existing department functions and make it easier to place social-service items on the commission agenda. Staff noted the ordinance language dates to 1984 and needs updating; the suggested changes are largely confined to the board name and would not alter the membership or basic configuration, which already includes 11 members.

Members discussed the implications for outreach and whether the renaming would require broader structural changes. Supporters said the new name would give the commission “more teeth” to highlight community-service needs and improve coordination with other providers. One ordinance committee member on the commission said he would carry the item to the next ordinance committee meeting.

The motion to refer the proposal to the ordinance committee was made, seconded and approved on a voice vote. Staff advised that any funding, program changes or recruitment strategy would remain subject to future council or Board of Finance action; the referral was limited to updating the ordinance language. The ordinance committee review is the next procedural step; the commission did not adopt the new name at the meeting.
