Fire Chief Hart told the Board of Fire Commissioners that crews responded to a reported fire on Mitchell Street and encountered heavy fire and zero visibility on the second floor. Firefighters located and removed one occupant, who was transported by EMS to Bridgeport Hospital's burn center; Chief Hart said the person's condition was unknown when he last received an update.
“Companies when they first arrived, there was a heavy fire in the rear of the building,” Chief Hart (speaker 3) said, describing search and rescue operations and a subsequent transfer of patient care to EMS. He said overhaul and Fire Marshal access were underway and that the department would provide updates as more information becomes available.
The chief said he had been contacted by the media and provided a brief, preliminary account; he did not provide an updated condition for the transported occupant during the meeting.
