Northeast Student Council presents food drive, leadership and school-engagement projects

The student council member (addressing the commission) described how the council was established in the 2024–25 school year, now has 13 members, and meets every other Wednesday. "Our main mission has been to represent the voices of students and staff by establishing and executing goals and objectives to make our school and our community a better place," the student said, describing morning-announcement contributions for Black History Month, Women's History Month and Juneteenth and use of Google Meets to deliver announcements.
The student said the council coordinated a November–December food drive that collected and distributed more than 1,000 nonperishable food items to Brian's Angels, the Salvation Army and a local church food pantry. They also summarized spirit week themes, a kindness raffle to reward staff, a small Valentine fundraiser and a field trip in January to a Southern Connecticut leadership conference where students learned communication and teamwork skills.
Looking ahead the council is running a bottle drive through April to fund a courtyard planting dedicated to the current student council and planning end-of-year field-day style activities tailored for different grade levels. The presenter said student submissions to a suggestion box are being piloted and a short school-news video was created at the Board of Education's request.
Commissioners praised the council's outreach and encouraged continued student engagement; the presentation concluded with an invitation for commissioners to ask questions and for staff to support the bottle drive and other logistics.
