Parks board approves Peck Park field renovation and drainage engineering request

The Bristol Parks & Recreation Commission unanimously approved a motion on March 18 to proceed with a funded renovation of Robert Watson Field at Peck Park and to request city engineering input on drainage.
Scott Lige, president of Vista Little League, told the board the league has secured $25,000 toward an approximately $50,000 September renovation to raise and crown Watson Field to reduce flooding and make the outfield playable. Lige said volunteers and local landscapers have offered time and equipment and the league plans larger fundraising for longer-term improvements including lights and parking changes.
Commissioners noted the league's stewardship but stressed the importance of engineering design to ensure temporary or volunteer work does not wash away. Deputy Superintendent Sarah Larsen moved the motion to approve the renovation plan and to ask public works to review site drainage; a commissioner seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Staff clarified the leaguewould continue to maintain completed fields and that Green Hills School fields would remain school property even if the city or partners perform upgrades. The commission also discussed lease timing (current lease expires December 2026) and urged the league and staff to coordinate a more formal timeline and documentation ahead of construction.
Next steps: staff will coordinate a public-works site visit to provide engineering recommendations, document allowable volunteer work under the MOU, and proceed with scheduling the September field renovation subject to successful coordination.
